Getting the most out of Networking for your Jobsearch

14 May 2025

If you're looking for a new role, especially a senior one, networking must be your #1 strategy.

Why? Because people hire people. And most of the best jobs aren’t posted publicly.

If you want to be on the shortlist, you need to be known, recommended, or found by the people filling those roles. Networking increases the odds of all three.

The Goal - To be linked with suitable opportunities, ideally via recommendations

The Strategy - Be known to as many relevant people as possible—people who can connect you to opportunities or introduce you to others who can.

Why? Because opportunities are unpredictable. You can’t plan where they’ll come from. But you can improve your chances by increasing the volume and quality of your relationships.

The more people who:
✅ Know you’re looking
✅ Understand what you’re looking for
✅ Get your value proposition
✅ Feel compelled to recommend you

…the more doors you open.

How to Network (without feeling awkward)

In simple terms:
Talk to people. Be interested in them. Be clear about what you're looking for. Leave a good impression.

Ask questions. Be curious. And yes—share what you’re looking for. But don’t make it all about you.

Here’s a message you could send:

“Hey [Name], hope you’re well! Saw you started a new role at [Company]—congrats! I’m on the lookout for a new challenge myself and would love to get your advice on my positioning and approach. Any chance you’re free for a catch-up in the next couple of weeks?”

Then, when you speak:

  1. Share how you’re positioning yourself.

  2. Talk about the types of roles and companies you're targeting.

  3. Ask for their perspective—it’s flattering and often insightful.

  4. End with this:

“Is there anyone else you think it’d be useful for me to speak to?”

This builds your network—fast.

Rinse and repeat.
This isn’t a one-and-done. It's a momentum game. Every conversation grows your visibility, clarity, and chances.

And here’s the truth: you don’t need everyone to help. Just a few people who do.
